Polished, honed or brushed? Choosing a natural stone finish

The same stone's finish changes look, slip resistance and care. Which finish for which area?

The same marble slab looks and behaves like three different stones when polished, honed and brushed. That is why, when choosing stone for a project, you need to look not only at colour but at finish. Below are six common finishes and recommendations for use.

Polished

It is brought to mirror gloss with diamond abrasives (≥ 90 GU) and shows colour and vein at their deepest. It is slippery when wet, so it suits walls, countertops and dry lobbies rather than floors in wet areas.

Honed (matt)

The polishing process is stopped halfway; the surface becomes silky matt with less reflection. It is a balanced option for bathrooms, kitchens and commercial floors. Slip resistance (PTV 36–45) is higher than polished.

Brushed

Soft surfaces are worn away with steel or nylon brushes to form texture. It is ideal for exteriors and pool surrounds and gives a weathered look that hides scratches.

Flamed

The surface is heated with a 2,500°C flame and cooled rapidly, the top crystal layer bursts and leaves a rough texture. It is used on granite and basalt and reaches above PTV 60.

Tumbled and sandblasted

Tumbled: processed in a drum with stone pieces to round the edges, rustic in look and common in Mediterranean and classic projects. Sandblasted: given a matt texture by sand jet, reducing sun glare on façades.

Selection tips

  • At least PTV 36 for wet floors and PTV 54+ around pools
  • On white stones a honed finish reduces the visibility of fingerprints and stains
  • Tone differences can appear between finishes in one project; judge sample tiles side by side

Finish and care

A polished surface shows scratches and water marks most, but it can be re-polished. A honed surface masks small scratches and a brushed surface is the most forgiving for maintenance. Outdoors, an annual pressure-water wash for algae and dirt and re-impregnation every two years are enough.

The finish also affects price: polished costs about 6–8% more than honed because of additional polishing time, and brushed about 4–5% more. Before deciding, examine sample tiles under real lighting.
